LOUNY, Czech Republic — Four possible victims have come forward in the investigation of a 40-year-old man accused of torturing a woman by imprisoning her in a basement in the Louny region for several months, police said Thursday. The victim escaped and reported the abuse, leading to the man’s arrest and charges including deprivation of personal liberty, rape, and extortion, said Tomáš Frolík of the regional police.

Authorities have since broadened the case, upgrading the charge of deprivation of personal liberty to one involving an organized group, as three other individuals are suspected of aiding the main suspect in holding the woman captive. Two women, ages 24 and 41, and a 31-year-old man remain at large but have been formally charged with deprivation of personal liberty in an organized group, Frolík said.

All four face up to 12 years in prison if convicted. The suspects are believed to have been in close relationships with the accused and allegedly helped imprison the victim, according to police.

“Four people have come forward so far, claiming they have had contact with the accused man,” Frolík added. Police have questioned these individuals and are investigating the full circumstances of the case, calling on the public to report any additional potential victims.

The main suspect had a prior conviction for a similar offense. However, according to media reports, the appeals court altered his original three-year unconditional prison sentence to a suspended sentence, a decision currently under review by the Ministry of Justice.

The case has raised concerns over missed warning signs, including why probation officers did not detect the abuse sooner. Police say the investigation is ongoing and that further charges against the main suspect are possible.

The regional police urge anyone with information related to this or other possible victims to contact authorities immediately.

This case is part of a disturbing pattern in Czechia, where abusers often receive shockingly lenient sentences. Last month, protests erupted in Prague after a suspended sentence was handed to a man convicted of repeatedly raping a minor. Critics say the justice system repeatedly fails victims, fueling public outrage and calls for reform.
